Jennifer Prior get her kicks on the football field |
|
|
|
|
Jennifer Prior officially earned her stripes as a football player on July 10.
Prior’s team, the semi-pro Flint Fury, was down 16-15 to its cross-town rival, the Flint Rampage, after Fury quarterback Matt Terry scored on a 4-yard keeper. That’s when Prior got the nod from her coach to go in.
The ball was snapped, and Prior, who is 3-for-3 in point-after attempts in 2010, split the uprights to tie the game at 16.
“I
just went out, zoned in, and put it through,” she said. “My coach
debated on whether to tell me it was the game-tying attempt — he didn’t
want to make me nervous.
“It was a nice feeling hearing all the guys say ‘good job,’ it made it feel, at the moment, that I was on the team.”
After
the play, Prior was informed that only nine players were on the field,
and that made her thank her lucky stars she eluded being driven into the
turf.
Prior has turned heads in her first year with the semi-pro Fury. She’s never let her gender pose an issue to teammates.

Rags-to-Riches Story Continues for Kings Comets’ Mardy Gilyard
When the NFL Draft kicks off Thursday night, MCFL fans, players, and coaches will have more than the usual interest in which players their favorite teams add. That’s because one of their own, University of Cincinnati All-American receiver and former Kings Comets defensive back Mardy Gilyard is projected to be drafted Friday, in the second or third round of the NFL draft.
Gilyard played the first three games of the 2007 season with the Comets before returning to UC as part of a rags-to-riches story that saw him go from living out of his car to this weekend’s draft.
After a season as a defensive back in 2005, his freshman year at UC, Gilyard’s career was nearly derailed.
“I was ruled academically ineligible and I had to withdraw from school,” Gilyard said. “I was pre-enrolled in school in some classes. When I

Kent Smith is playing in the Canadian Football League
REGINA — The Saskatchewan Roughriders’ quarterbacks are, appropriately enough, predominantly green in terms of development.
Of the four signal-callers who are under contract to the Riders, three have yet to play a down in the Canadian Football League. The signings of two of them — Cole Bergquist and Kent Smith — were confirmed Friday.
