The Louisville Bulls (1-0) defeated the Letcher County Wolves (2-2) of the Alliance Football League, 62-6, in a non-league contest to open their 2010 campaign at Scribner Middle School in New Albany, Indiana. This was the first time the Bulls hosted a home game outside of Louisville in their 23 year existance. New regulations banning adult sports at Louisville area public schools forced the move.
Louisville had a shaky start in their opener, The Bulls received the opening kickoff with no return following a muff. Then fumbled snaps on the first 2 downs, were followed by a first down pass. The next play QB Brian Bishop and RB Thomas Wilkins mishandled the exchange under pressure by M Cornett of the Wolves. Trevor Buttrey scooped the fumble and returned it 37 yards for the Letcher County touchdown, the kick failed. The Bulls had put the ball on the ground on 3 of their first 4 plays.
Wolves QB Durrell O’Linger was intercepted by Josh Jenkins of the Bulls ending the ensuing drive. The Bulls marched downfield 55 yards in 6 plays, scoring on Bishop’s 1 yd keeper. Anthony Walters kicked the PAT, and the Bulls took the lead 7-6. The Bulls defense would force three consecutive punts by the Wolves, and the offense would score on two of the three ensuing drives. Bishop found Chris Curry for a 35yd touchdown pass (Walters kick), the next possession ended on downs, followed by another QB keeper as Bishop ran 5yds for the score (Walters kick). Bishop threw an 18 yard touchdown to Daryl Moore, Chris Curry ran in the PAT rush on a bad snap and the Bulls led 29-6 with 52 seconds left in the first half.
The Wolves next possession started on their own 35 yardline, aided by a penalties on the Bulls they marched to the Bulls 30 yardline. With less than 1 second remaining in the 2nd qtr Wilson from the Wolves attempted a 47 yard field goal. The kick was heavily pressured and was short bouncing to the Bulls 13 yardline to be scooped up by Lenny Pitters and returned 87 yards for a touchdown with the horn sounding to end the half. The kick failed and the Bulls led 35-6 at halftime.
The Wolves would turn the ball over losing a fumble on their next possession, Bishop quickly capitalized finding Marquis McAfee for a 30 yd touchdown, Walters kick was good. The Wolves put together a 7 play drive but O’Linger was intercepted by CJ Simpson. The Bulls marched 75 yards in 6 plays scoring on a 6 yard Bishop to Leonard Gwinn pass, kick failed. The Wolves would go 4 plays and out on downs on their next two drives, with the Bulls scoring on a 1 yard run by Thomas Wilkins (kick blocked), followed by a 6 yard run by AJ Kimbrough, Chris Curry again ran in the PAT following a bad snap and the Bulls led 62-6 with just 1:04 remaining in the game. The game ended when Nick Moore stripped the ball from the Wolves QB, Adam Acree jumped on the fumble for the Bulls as time expired.
Brian Bishop recovered from a shaky start on the first series to lead the Bulls to 8 touchdown on the next 9 possessions. Bishop completed 11 of 14 passes for 236 yards with 4 touchdowns and no interceptions. He carried the ball 10 times for 13 yards and 2 touchdowns. Marquis McAfee led all receivers with 5 catches for 106 yards and 1 touchdown, Chris Curry added 2 catches for 80 yards and a touchdown. Armando Ruiz had 1 catch for 19, Daryl Moore 1 for 18 and a touchdown, Bernard Barnes 1 for 7 yards, and Leonard Gwinn had a 6 yard touchdown catch. AJ Kinbrough led all rushers with 4 carries for 66 yards and a touchdown. Keena Watts added 8 carries for 61 yards, Justin Jones had 4 carries for 59, Gwinn had 4 for 46, Thomas Wilkins added 4 carries for 5 yards and a score.
Stuart McCormick and Brandan Burfict each had 6 tackles to lead the defense, The Bulls had 23 players record a defensive statistic. The Bulls defense held the Wolves to just 31 yards on 35 offensive plays, and forced 4 turnovers. The Wolves offense never reached the redzone advancing only as far as the Bulls 24 yardline. The Bulls offense had 54 plays for 474 yards, rushing 38 times for 250 yards, and having net passing of 224 yards.
The Bulls travel to Clarksville, TN to face the Clarksville Vipers (3-1) of the Alliance Football League on July 17th, then open MCFL play on July 24th hosting the Southern Michigan Timberwolves (2-1) at Scribner Middle School in New Albany, IN.
