II. JULY 24, 2010 ? GAME RECAPS
SOUTHERN MICHIGAN TIMBERWOLVES 26, LOUISVILLE BULLS 13 (at Scribner Middle School, New Albany, Ind.) Anthony Sherrill ran 25 times for 227 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Timberwolves to their first win against the Bulls since 2005. Sherrill?s big game started early, as he went 56 yards for a touchdown on the game?s first play from scrimmage. Sherrill later broke off a 52-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, putting the Timberwolves ahead, 13-0, before Louisville had recorded a first down. Keena Watts? 9-yard run pulled the Bulls to within 13-6, and Louisville stopped Southern Michigan at the 2-yard line as time ran out in the first half. The Timberwolves were able to add to their lead when LaMarr Toney caught an 11-yard pass from Adam Headley after Eric Summers recovered a fumble at the 10 yard line. A 62-yard connection from Mike Marshall to Chris Curry brought Louisville back to within 20-13 late in the third quarter, but Ernie Smith returned the kickoff 37 yards to the Louisville 35, and two runs by Sherrill, the second an 4-yard touchdown, restored Southern Michigan?s 13-point lead. A 15-play, 76-yard drive by the Timberwolves ate up 9:40 of the remaining time in the fourth quarter, securing the win. Mark Carter had four carries for 18 yards on the drive, and was also responsible for Southern Michigan?s only interception of the game. The Timberwolves did benefit from four Louisville turnovers while turning the ball over once themselves.
KINGS COMETS 13, DETROIT SEMINOLES 7
(at Taft High School, Cincinnati, Ohio) The Comets used three fourth-quarter interceptions to hold on for their first win in seven tries against the Seminoles in a matchup of the MCFL?s last two champions. Detroit reached Kings territory on eight of its nine possessions, reaching the red zone four times, but could only muster points on Robert Perkins? 3-yard run after Charles Barber returned the opening kickoff of the second half 57 yards. Josh Dugan responded with a 71-yard kick return for Kings, and Keith Brooks followed with a 17-yard touchdown run to put the Comets ahead, 13-7, with 6:35 left in the third quarter. A blocked punt gave Detroit the ball at Kings? 20-yard line early in the fourth, but Santino Turnbow intercepted a pass at the 3-yard line. After a Darryl Burrell interception gave Detroit the ball back at its own 21-yard line, Robert Hunt drove the Seminoles 62 yards before Brandon Martin picked off a fourth-down pass in the end zone with 3:14 remaining. A three-and-out and a 14-yard punt return by Barber gave Detroit one final chance at the Comets 33-yard line, but Will White tipped a pass in the air and picked it off to seal the victory for the 2009 MCFL champion Comets. Brooks ran 17 times for 70 yards for Kings. Phillip Barnett hauled in four passes for 92 yards for Kings, including a 41-yard touchdown just after the two-minute warning in the first half to give Kings a 7-0 lead.
COLUMBUS FIRE 48, FLINT FURY 0
(at Reynoldsburg High School, Columbus, Ohio)
Antwan Gibbs, Maurice Douse, and Demetrius Devonshire each ran for two touchdowns as the Fire opened the 2010 season with a shutout win against the Fury. Flint trailed just 7-0 late in the first half, but a 1-yard run by Gibbs extended that lead to 13-0, and the Fire tacked on three more scores in the third quarter. Gibbs threw a 6-yard touchdown to Ahmona Maxwell in the third quarter, when Columbus also scored on runs of 14 yards by Gibbs and 5 yards by Douse. Demetrius Devonshire, who opened the scoring with a 4-yard touchdown in the first quarter, scored from 26 yards out in the fourth quarter, and Douse finished the scoring with a 1-yard run in the final minute. Columbus? defense forced four turnovers in the contest.
