Mustangs Open Season at University of Toledo’s Glass Bowl! The Indiana Mustangs open up league play this Saturday, July 31 at the Glass Bowl against the 2009 MCFL defending champions Kings Comets. The Mustangs – Comets game is scheduled to kickoff at 5 pm. The Glass Bowl will serve as the host site for four MCFL games on Saturday with the first game kicking off at 11 am, and the last game beginning at 8 pm. Tickets (wristbands) are $10 for adults, $5 for students, 5 years old and under are free. Wristband is good for all day, and you may come and go as you wish.
The Comets are coming off one of their biggest wins in team history as they defeated league powerhouse Detroit Seminoles 13 – 7 in Cincinnati last weekend. Despite winning the league championship last year, the Comets had not defeated the Seminoles previously with the Comets only loss last year to the Seminoles in preseason play. The Comets will feature several indoor players from the 2010 CIFL Champions Cincinnati Commandos. The Mustangs also had five players who played indoor football this spring with the Ft. Wayne Firehawks, but unfortunately for the Mustangs, only former Taylor University offensive lineman, Brandon Brenizer is currently playing for the Mustangs. The Mustang’s top receiver Brandon Williams who was the 2009 MCFL Offensive Player of the Year is waiting for an opportunity with the Indianapolis Colts, and the Mustang’s top defensive back, Paul Carter who was first team all conference last year is currently job hunting. The Mustangs were not in action last week due to an opening season bye. The Mustangs are led by former University of St. Francis signal caller Eric Hooks (North Central HS). Hooks will be featured this Wednesday on Spike TV in a reality show called Pros vs. Joes. Hooks will lead three amateur athletes called Joes against three professional athletes called Pros. The Pros will be led by former Pro Bowl quarterback Michael Vick. The Mustangs are still looking for quality players, dedicated volunteers, coaches and corporate sponsors for 2010. Advertising opportunities are available ranging from $75 - $2,500. For more information on the Indiana Mustangs, please contact either the Director of Marketing - Garrett Doan (317-698-2074) or Team President - James Stamper (765-451-0790). Who are the Indiana Mustangs? The Indiana Mustangs are a group of guys who enjoy playing and promoting football for the purity of the game. There are no million dollar contracts or pre-season holdouts. In fact, players are responsible for their own equipment and insurance. Players come from all over central Indiana…i.e. Indianapolis-metro, Noblesville, Carmel, Westfield, Fishers, Kokomo, Lafayette, Logansport, Peru, Marion, Greenwood and Anderson. .
Many of our players are former high school standouts, and most have some college experience (approx. 60%). For a select few, the Mustangs represent an opportunity to keep the dream alive and the skills tuned for a hopeful shot at another level. The Mustangs currently have four players playing with the Ft. Wayne Firehawks of the Continental Indoor Football League (CIFL). Since 1991, the Mustangs have had twenty players play professionally in Europe, one in the Canadian Football League and nine in indoor professional football. The team was founded in 1991 and was later incorporated into a non-profit organization (501c7) in 1992. The team is funded through corporate sponsorships, player fees, gate admissions, raffles and private contributions. In twenty years, the annual operating budget has increased from $5,000 in the first year to over $20,000 annually. Team expenses can be categorized into the following: field rental, referees, postage/printing, travel, equipment, and league dues. Although volunteers provide most of the labor to run the team, we do pay some support staff such as the trainer and statistician.
The Mustangs were extremely successful during the mid-1990’s with three consecutive seasons of ten wins or more. This success brought national recognition to the team as one of the top team’s in the nation. In 1995, the Mustangs were undefeated during the regular season and ranked #1 nationally for four weeks by the American Football Association.
The Mustangs are members of the prestigious Mid Continental Football League (MCFL). The league is comprised of nine teams covering Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio and Kentucky. Several former Division I athletes have kept their careers active in the MCFL…former Heisman runner-up, Major Harris (West Virginia / So. Mich Twolves); Ricky Powers (Michigan / So. Mich Twolves); former Cleveland Browns full back, Chris Floyd (Michigan / So. Michigan Twolves); Cory Rogers & Earnest Calloway (Purdue / Indiana Mustangs).
Every year some of the best adult amateur athletes in the country compete in the MCFL, and in 2010, the MCFL had its first player drafted by the NFL. Former Kings Comets’ and UC standout, Mardy Gilyard was drafted in the 4th round by the St. Louis Rams.
